View Article  LexisNexis UK looking for new legal IT head honcho
Latest reports from Halsbury Towers, the hallowed UK home of LexisNexis, suggest that the company is about to embark upon yet another reorganisation of the management of its legal software businesses.

The story so far is that... immediately prior to the Axxia acquisition, there was a plan (devised by Kate Holden) to combine the Visualfiles and Interaction businesses into some kind of software + consultancy division. Then along came the Axxia deal and Kate Holden's new global domination plan, with Axxia and Visualfiles providing the core of a global law firms strategy and Interaction back out on its own. Then Holden (Kate) left and Axxia and Visualfiles became the UK arm of the LexisNexis Practice & Productivity Management division, with other geographical regions having their own products in their respective P&PM divisions. Now, there are rumblings of appointing a new software supremo responsible for the Axxia + Visualfiles + Interaction businesses on a UK (or even possibly EMEA-wide) basis.

We hear that Tim Cheadles, currently the general manager of LexisNexis Practice & Productivity, is the front-runner for this poison chalice prime appointment. There again, in two years' time (if they haven't been bought by Bloomberg or Google by then) LexisNexis will probably do a HotDocs and sell the whole software business off to someone else.

Hildebrandt expand Asia-Pacific Operations
Legal management consultancy Hildebrandt (part of the Thomson Reuters group) has announced the opening of new offices in Beijing, Hong Kong and Sydney effective January 1, 2010. According to the consultancy, the potential growth of the legal profession in Asia is impressive. Global firms continue to invest in the region although many lack a strategic business plan for their offices. Local and regional firms are also growing and we envision some potential consolidation of the market. The biggest challenge for local and regional firms is to put in place a structure and systems that will allow them to compete effectively in this changing market. "We would not be surprised if there were consolidation between the growing Chinese firms and a major US or UK firm."

Hildebrandt chairman Bradford Hildebrandt adds "Establishing a local presence in Beijing, Hong Kong and Sydney is a natural next step for Hildebrandt as we continue to expand our operations across Asia. There are many exciting opportunities for Hildebrandt to bring state of the art consulting services to the Asian legal market. It is important for us to have offices here in order to support the needs of our clients and others investing in these cities. Hildebrandt already has strong client relationships in Australia and will continue our commitment to the region, while expanding our commitment to Asia and the ongoing needs of our clients."

Hildebrandt will use its presence in Asia to provide a range of legal services including practice organization, strategic growth, client relations, compensation and governance.

View Article  Baker Robbins to lose Baker
Baker Robbins & Company (BRCO) has just announced that co-founder and chairman David Baker will retire on January 1, 2010. Baker has worked the legal technology sector for over 30 years, founding BRCO in 1984. (In January 2007 the consultancy was acquired by Thomson Reuters.)

Baker is leaving the legal industry to accept a role with the University of Wisconsin in an initiative involving best practice development in small and mid size farm operations management. The effort is funded by the USDA's Risk Management Agency and comes at a critical time in which local, sustainable food sources must be more heavily emphasized across the country in light of growing challenges such as global warming and carbon footprint, water supply, food transportation costs, and food quality.

Co-founder Brad Robbins will remain in his position of CEO at BRCO.

Epiq Systems Inc has integrated Equivio's Relevance document prioritization technology into its IQ Review discovery management platform. “Typically, less than 20%t of documents in a collection are actually responsive to a given matter," says Greg Wildisen, Epiq international managing director. "Through its integration with Equivio Relevance, Epiq’s IQ Review allows legal teams to concentrate their efforts on responsive documents. IQ Review saves our clients significant time and money that would otherwise have been spent reviewing non-responsive material.”

Equivio Relevance is an expert-guided system that enhances the e-discovery process through automated document prioritization. Using statistical and self-learning techniques based on initial input from a lead attorney, Equivio calculates relevance scores for each document in the data collection. By scoring the review set according to relevance rankings, Equivio enables the prioritization of documents so that attorneys can immediately zero in on the most relevant material.
