We've had plenty of stories in recent weeks about the stream of new events being launched by conference organizers who appear unaware there is a recession on – or that IT vendors do not have a bottomless marketing budget. The reality is reflected in a conversation we had at the end of last week with a large and successful US-based software vendor who reported they would be cutting the number of staff they had attending this August's ILTA annual conference by 40% to save on travel and accommodation costs.

Can't get enough of visiting legal trade shows or – if you are a vendor – being asked to sponsor and/or exhibit at them? Well now there is another one to contend with and here is the promo blurb...
A national legal event featuring exhibitors and seminars from leading experts has been announced for this autumn. The event, NLTEX, will be held in Liverpool at the new BT Convention Centre on the 23rd of October. Visitors will have the opportunity to listen to inspirational speakers and meet business experts who work in the sector. Denise Harris, managing director of SK Events, the organisers behind NLTEX said: “This will be the biggest event of its kind in the UK. We are expecting hundreds of legal professionals to attend this exhibition and the seminars.” Entry to the exhibition is free and exhibitors confirmed so far include Royal Bank Of Scotland, Mitchel Charlesworth, Audi, IDS and Wesleyan for Lawyers. Places on the seminars cost £35 per person and offer the opportunity to hear advice from leaders in the fields of criminal law, IT and communications. Legal professionals attending the seminars will also be able to gain a valuable five CPD points. Guest speakers at the seminars include eminent English Barrister Michael Mansfield and international speaker Andy Bounds. Michael Mansfield has worked on some of the country’s most famous cases, representing Michael Barrymore at the Stuart Lubbock inquest, the Bloody Sunday families and Mohamed al-Fayed in the inquest into the deaths of his son Dodi al-Fayed and Diana, Princess of Wales. He will be speaking on a range of legal issues from the short comings of forensic science to the future of the international criminal court. Andy Bounds is the bestselling author of The Jelly Effect. Andy’s expertise lies in helping businesses all over the world to communicate in ways that get results every time. He will be lecturing on the easiest, quickest and most pleasant way to generate fees. To find out more about seminars and exhibiting at the event call 0151 522 9362 or visit www.nltex.co.uk * For the record, if you have a slack period this autumn – or need to pick up a few CPD points before the end of October, these events have already been announced: Alternative Legal IT Conference 17 & 18.09.09, London New conference from LexisNexis Butterworths for mid-tier law firms. Orange Rag and Legal Technology Insider editor Charles Christian is visiting Australia at the end of this month to do a couple of seminars with DocsCorp and possibly something with the local ILTA chapter. He flies into Sydney on the morning of Monday 27 July – will be in Melbourne for part of 29th/30th – and departs mid-day Saturday 1st August. In between the jetlag, seminars and (hopefully) partying, he's available for meetings.

It's deja vu all over again – or another example of an organisation trying to bucket a little more water out of the well. Yes, Informa Legal – the latest manifestation of the Informa Group to takeover running the Islington Legal IT Show – has just announced plans for a software product directory. This will be given out free of charge to the 2500 visitors attending the 2010 show – and all vendors have to do to be included is part with a little more of their marketing budgets.
Well done Informa for boldly going where nobody has gone before – that is if you exclude earlier directories published by The Lawyer, Legal Week/Legal IT, The Law Society and of course Keith Searby's Truemist outfit who produced an annual product directory in conjunction with their Barbican Solex shows. * We were approached by some salesman because our LegalTechnology.com website "sells services to lawyers". We said "You haven't done your homework have you as you don't actually know what we do?" Embarassed silence from other end of phone. And then we pointed out that as we have far more readers than they have visitors, perhaps they should be advertising with us and not vice versa. Salesman's telesales script say no and the call ended. |
