* Phoenix Workspace Information Manager enables firms to present Matter/Project related information from a range of systems when clicking on a Workspace in WorkSite. WIM allows the firm to utilise the whitespace that the user sees when they click on a Workspace and populate it with clien/matter or project related information from any source within the firm. This could be contact information, financial information, critical dates or anything else that may be referred to. Pulling this information into FileSite means increases the use and flexibility of WorkSite and puts the information at the user’s fingertips.

And we're off with the first of many stories from LegalTech New York, starting with an exclusive preview of some news from IntApp...
IntApp Inc, provider of the most adopted confidentiality management, time capture and application integration software products for law firms, has just announced record growth figures. Presently IntApp serves over 230 customers, ranging in size from 50 to 3750 lawyers, including 63% of the 100 largest US firms as ranked by The American Lawyer. In the past twelve months IntApp has added 48 new law firm customers and licensed 73 additional products to existing law firm customers Recent IntApp customer wins include Russell Kennedy, Corrs Chambers Westgarth, Fishburns, Wiggin, Lewis Silkin, Miles & Stockbridge and Burr & Forman. In addition in 2011, IntApp grew internal headcount by over 40%, with significant investments in R&D, client support, professional services and account management staff. Next week IntApp will also be formally announcing two new wins (but you can read them first here, right now)... McKenna Long & Aldridge, an international law firm with 475 lawyers and public policy advisors, is now using IntApp Wall Builder to enforce ethical screens and manage information security for client confidential matters across the firm. “Given increasing calls for confidentiality driven by clients and other factors, our firm sought to replace a legacy software tool, which IT had been using to enforce limited security in our OpenText DM5 document management system, with a more modern application that could automate the entire confidentiality lifecycle and provide our less technical staff with a user interface they could manage themselves,” said Paul Hurdle, Senior Counsel, Head of New Matter Intake & Conflicts, McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP. “We looked at several options and quickly recognized that IntApp was the industry expert and that Wall Builder was the most mature product. Today, with our intake and risk staff using Wall Builder to create, manage and report on confidentiality policies across the firm, we know we made the right choice.” “From our perspective, it’s clear why so many firms have chosen IntApp Wall Builder – the product was easy to weave into our existing intake, screening and compliance reporting processes and has significantly enhanced our internal confidentiality practices,” said Dave Scarzafava, IT Financial Systems Manager, McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP. “We were particularly pleased with the skill and speed with which the IntApp services team implemented the product. Because of their past experience at other firms, IntApp was able to migrate the existing security rules from our legacy security tool and import them into Wall Builder without a hitch or hiccup.” + Miles & Stockbridge PC, a mid-Atlantic law firm with over 200 lawyers, has selected IntApp Time Builder to enhance its time recording practices. “Our firm sees tremendous opportunity to improve profitability and lawyer quality of life by automating time capture,” said Ken Adams, Chief Information Officer, Miles & Stockbridge. “We conducted peer reference checks and detailed evaluations of two products and quickly confirmed that IntApp Time Builder offered unrivaled data matching intelligence and ease of use, both of which are critical to lawyer adoption and success with this class of software.” IntApp Time Builder is a software product that enables law firms to increase revenue by capturing billable time that is missed or under-billed. It does this by providing lawyers with an accurate, consolidated report of their client and matter-related activity, generated by automatically monitoring the key applications they use throughout the day. Tracked systems include document creation, email, calendar, phone, and mobile devices. Wednesday, January 11

Still 64 days to go until the LawTech Futures event opens its doors on 15th March in London and the show has already crossed the chasm to becoming the event for the UK large law firms. With it's latest exhibitor signing – IRIS Legal – LawTech Futures becomes the first UK legal event to feature exhibition stands and sponsorship by all the market's top tier practice management systems suppliers (Aderant, Elite, IRIS, LexisNexis and Tata/SAP) since 2006.
Comment: Looks like this could be one of those turning points when we see a clear successor event move into the market, just as happened to the old Solex exhibitions at the Barbican. Friday, December 23

We couldn't attend last week's Bighand UK user conference in London however one of our elves was there and took this note for us...
Hosted at the newly refurbished 5-star Renaissance Hotel in St Pancras, London yesterday [celebrity watch in the foyer quickly became a conference sport with Sophie Ellis-Bextor spotted early on] the 260 delegates at the BigHand European Legal & Professional User Conference witnessed the unveiling of BigHand4.2, and with it – it seems – the genuine restoration of speech recognition as a practical business solution for law firms. Just as the breakthroughs in art and literature sparked a cultural revival in the 15th century from which the conference venue took its name, a seriously improved engine from Dragon gracefully leveraged for lawyers and secretaries by BigHand appears to have now led us to a moment of enlightenment for speech recognition in legal. The conference heard that since the last release of its server-based speech recognition integration with Dragon, BigHand has surveyed a pool of 2000 server-based speech recognition users in legal (out of 145,000 BigHand software users in total) and have introduced several user-led advanced recognition features (see last week's Orange Rag blog and newsletter coverage for more details) that have the potential to make the technology as ubiquitous a choice for law firms as digital dictation workflow has now become. A key note from Peter Mackinnon, SVP & GM at Nuance (manufacturers of the Dragon engine) on the future of voice highlighted that Dragon now has 21 million desktop users worldwide and that, alongside the rise of Siri on the iPhone which Peter was more than happy to reference, is proving that the quality of the technology is not now the barrier “but it is all about adoption”. Several early adopter firms present reported the recent leap from Dragon version 10 to version 11 has proved significant, and a case study by a partner at Hammonds profiled his use of Speech Recognition technology to write all 250,000 words for his new legal book within 6 months. The mid-morning Speech Recognition Panel discussion saw Kay Oliver at Maxwell Winward and David Bason at Shoosmiths discuss success rates within their own server-based speech recognition installations. The consensus was that while BigHand’s treatment of the engine is now making it the transformative legal technology it has long been promising to be, a minority within any firm will still resist its usage and that widespread uptake will pick up momentum over a period of 12-36 months. Transformation and innovation were as ever a central theme for Ari Kaplan in both his CIO Forum and his post lunch Conference sessions [a book signing during the coffee break was so popular it saw Ari run out of copies of his new book]. Ari’s dynamic themes led perfectly into a lively Panel discussion on the changing mobility landscape within law firms, and specifically the challenges of supporting increasing numbers of personal devices within the work environment. Karen Jacks at Bird & Bird outlined their approach to a new fleet of iPads, and Angela McMahon of Mishcon de Reya outlined her belief that the increased interest in smartphone and tablets from partners should be embraced, wherever possible, given how long we have been trying to get them interested in technology full stop. Downloaded apps rather than device choice, it was concluded, now presents the next significant challenge in fleet management and security. A post-conference Speech Recognition and SpeechMike3 promotion is being offered by BigHand, those interested were invited email accountmanagement@bighand.com before the end of December for more details. OK, we're going commercial here but it is time to mention LawTech Futures, a new event (combining three conference/presentation stages and an exhibition) that Legal Technology Insider (the publishers of the Orange Rag) and NetLaw Media (probably best known for their Partners Club and Key Strategies for Law Firms events) have been jointly developing over the past few months. The speakers are now all signed up, as are most of the sponsors and stand spaces (still some room left), the website is filling up nicely and the programme is at the printers so here we go with the news coverage. Here are some of the key facts...
