View Article  Another Elite win and a "better recipe for success"
At a meeting with Steve Beuge, the CEO of Elite, earlier this week at the ILTA conference in Maryland, he told The Orange Rag that, in the wake of the A&O implementation, Lovells was "re-engaging" and back on course with its Elite 3E PMS implementation and now had a "better recipe for success and clearer vision of the final outcome".

Keeping with the culinary metaphor, the proof of the pudding includes the fact that...

• over the past 60 days, five more 3E sites have gone live (there are now 24 organisations live on 3E)

• and, this month (August) has seen three more 3E orders – one in Australia (an old Aderant site - see below) + one in the UK + one in the US. (The latter two are an Enterprise upgrade and a 3rd party legacy system swap out.)

Beuge added that the company was now "starting to think about new products, new markets and possible acquisitions".

That Australian win...
Seventy lawyer M+K Lawyers, which has offices in Melbourne, Sydney and Victoria, has selected 3E as its new practice management system. The firm's chief financial officer Len Methananda said the firm selected Elite 3E because they needed "a practice management system that will easily scale as our business grows and also allow us to meet evolving and unanticipated client expectation." Adding that "We have been constrained by our current system's dated technology and its 'band aid' approach to new functionality."

Orange Rag sources say the firm currently runs an old Aderant CMS system but had "stopped speaking to Aderant years ago" and that "the marriage had been over a long time ans it was only a case of when the divorce would be announced."

View Article  Welcome to online vendor bingo
One of the regular features of every ILTA conference is 'vendor bingo' – which encourages delegates to visit as many exhibitor booths as possible, in return for which they have a chance to win some very generous prizes. In keeping with the trend toward virtualization at many of this year's industry tradeshows, the 2009 ILTA conference in Washington, DC is upping the ante by featuring an online version of its vendor bingo game via its arrangement with LegalQB.com.  The contest starts on Monday 24 August on the virtual exhibit hall site www.legalqb.com/tradeshows and is open to all registered ILTA members – whether attending the conference or not – with a $500 American Express gift card prize for the winner.

Aderant today announced it has purchased a suite of DMS/ECM (Enterprise Content Management) applications developed by StarLaw.  The acquisition adds integrated document management, records management, and email management solutions to Aderant’s product portfolio.

The announcement goes on to say...ADERANT’s purchase of StarLaw’s Enterprise Content Management (ECM) applications enables it to enter a market that is of growing importance to lawyers and law firms.  Importantly, the new ECM application suite is being designed with the unique needs of law firms in mind instead of trying to retrofit a more industry-generic solution with functionality required by the legal market.

“Acquiring StarLaw’s advanced applications enables us to greatly expand the breadth of solutions we are able to deliver to law firms,” said Michael Kohlsdorf, President and Chief Executive Officer for ADERANT.  “This transaction moves ADERANT closer to becoming a single-source software vendor for law firms, providing integrated solutions for both the front and back office that reduce IT complexity and costs.”

Early adopters of the ECM application suite include Cooley Godward Kronish LLP and O’Melveny & Meyers LLP.

"We were enthusiastic about StarLaw's vision for an enterprise-wide content management system that achieved convergence among the different methods lawyers use for generating, storing and retrieving documents, records, and emails, and are greatly encouraged by ADERANT's commitment to reinvigorating the product," said Martin Metz, Director of Information Technology for O’Melveny & Myers LLP.

ADERANT is currently working on the next generation of its new ECM applications.  The new document management application will enable firms to effectively control and monitor electronic content throughout the entire document lifecycle process, including storage, retrieval, modification, review, and preservation.  The records management application will archive, track, and retrieve all firm-protected electronic and physical content.  The email management functionality will allow attorneys and legal staff to efficiently file and organize all relevant email messages as well as associated attachments.

ADERANT’s new ECM applications will be generally available in Q1 2010.

View Article  LegalQB launches virtual tradeshow
Following on the heels of last week's announcement by Pilgrim that it was pulling out of the UK's largest legal IT tradeshow because it felt this was no longer a relevant marketing channel, LegalQB in the US has just announced the formal launch of a new virtual tradeshow and marketing platform. Here's the full story – and 'yes' The Orange Rag plug will be providing the service with a news feed...

LegalQB.com announced the full launch and implementation of its virtual tradeshow platform in conjunction with the 2009 ILTA Education Conference in Washington, DC.  The conference begins on August 23rd but attendees, interested parties and vendors can get a jump on researching products and services, as well as exchanging information, starting today via the company’s official website link www.legalqb.com/tradeshows

“We’re extremely proud to be deploying our full featured launch on time as promised, “said Joshua Siegel, the company’s CEO, following a year of extensive development and previews such as the ABA Techshow in Chicago earlier this year. “LegalQB.com is a rich media legal technology portal integrating vendor information, a comprehensive knowledge base, resources, online trade show information and education together with a diverse online community,” continued Siegel.  “By utilizing our rich media environment, potential clients are fully immersed in the sales cycle by direct contact with the vendor and the community at large.”

The virtual tradeshow for the ILTA conference serves as the exclusive online platform for research and the exchange of ideas before, during and after the conference. LegalQB.com offers unprecedented online access to technology vendors, trade shows and peers and reduces much of the problems of cold calling, preliminary sales meetings, colleague referrals and conflicting conference schedules. Essentially, LegalQB.com provides a comprehensive communications platform allowing all parties to view and process relevant information in order to make informed and educated decisions about a product or service.

The Payne Group, a long time provider in security software and automation tools, has announced the release of Outlook Send Assistant, which verifies recipient email addresses and warns the user if the message is being sent under a variety of different and potentially damaging circumstances such as to a distribution list or using Reply To All.

When used in conjunction with Outlook 2000 or higher and on HTML formatted -mails, Outlook Send Assistant can be configured to fit many different gotcha scenarios that users may experience. Huron Consulting Group hit by shares scandal
Reuters report that the Chicago-based Huron Consulting Group 'which helps clients dodge accounting pitfalls and stay on the right side of the law, faced its own corporate meltdown on Monday sparked by a bookkeeping scandal that wiped nearly $660 million from its market value since Friday.'

Huron, which also operates in the litigation support/e-discovery consultancy area, was formed in 2002 by 25 partners of the old Arthur Andersen business, said on Friday that its entire top management team would leave the company and that it would restate more than three years of results. The company's earnings for that period would be slashed almost in half because it had misreported costs related to acquisitions. Huron stock closed down 69.13 percent at $13.69 on Nasdaq.

Huron's audit committee discovered shareholders of four businesses that Huron acquired between 2005 and 2007 redistributed portions of their acquisition-related payments among themselves and to certain Huron employees who were not identified. Huron has already replaced chairman & chief executive Gary Holdren, as well as CFOr Gary Burge. The company also said chief accounting officer Wayne Lipski will be leaving the company.

The restatements raise costs for 2006-2008 and for the first quarter of this year. As a result aggregate net profit for that period dropped to just $63 million from $120 million. Huron also cut its 2009 revenue outlook to a range of $650 million to $680 million from its prior view of $730 million to $770 million. Two law firms are investigating potential shareholder claims against Huron over possible securities violations, while analysts are already raising questions about the company's ability to survive. Comments made include "we believe there are legitimate worries about Huron being a going concern" and "the damage to Huron's reputation will likely be significant."
